Academic Buddy Programme

What is the Academic Buddy Programme?

Academic Buddy Programme: what is it and who is it for?

The Academic Buddy Programme is a programme for international and local students. This programme matches international students who come to study in Utrecht (either degree seeking or as an exchange student) with students already studying at Utrecht University (UU)/University College Utrecht (UCU). A part of these UU/UCU students will soon go study abroad themselves.

As Academic Buddies you can help each other by getting to know your new or prospective domicile abroad, and the local (academic) traditions and habits, as well as work on/improve your language skills and intercultural competences.

How is this Academic Buddy Programme different from other Buddy Programmes?

  • This programme is focussed on the academic setting, instead of only the social;
  • This programme offers workshops on intercultural competences and didactics in peer feedback with regards to language skills;
  • The matching of Buddies is based on a shared (home or exchange) university, city or country, and/or language interests;
  • This programme is an interdisciplinary cooperation between the Faculties of ‘Humanities’, ‘Law, Economics and Governance’ and ‘Social and Behavioural Sciences’ of Utrecht University.
  • The programme cooperates with the student organization BuddyGoDutch, which organizes a variety of social activities open to all Academic Buddies.

Options Academic Buddy Programme

Within this programme students can take on different roles, ranging from less extensive academic contact to more extensive.

Everyone who joins the programme becomes an Academic Buddy (AB): you will be matched to another student and you can help each other with practical, cultural and social things with regards to university/student life/studying in the Netherlands or abroad.

Are you an international student?

  • International students who are on exchange at Utrecht University (faculties of HUM, LEG or FSBS) will be matched to a UU/UCU student who will him/herself go on exchange next Semester to your home destination (university, city or country).
  • International students who follow their degree at Utrecht University (faculties of HUM, LEG or FSBS) will be matched to a UU/UCU student who will go on exchange next Semester to your home destination (university, city or country).

Are you a UU/UCU student?

  • UU/UCU students who will go abroad the next Semester will be matched to international students from their exchange destination (university, city or country), who have come to study at UU/UCU.
  • UU/UCU students who would like to become an Academic Buddy, but are not going to study abroad, will be matched to international students who have come to study at UU/UCU based on their country or language interests.

If besides being an Academic Buddy, you (as international or UU/UCU student) want to offer more extensive help, you can add to this role a role as:

A Language Assistant (LA): you can help one or more students with their written and/or oral skills in his/her/their mother tongue(s) by providing them with peer feedback <link naar peer feedback>. It is possible to receive EC for this role. Please check the EC requirements here <EC requirements>.

If besides being an Academic Buddy, you (as international or UU/UCU student) need more extensive help, you can sign up as:

An Academic Buddy + (AB+): you will be matched to a Language Assistant who will help with written and/or oral skills in his/her mothertongue(s) by providing peer feedback.

Of course students can also go full in and take on three roles: an Academic BuddyLanguage Assistant as well as an Academic Buddy +.

When signing up for the programme, please indicate for which of these roles you would like to be matched. Everyone in the programme will be able to join the social activities organised by BuddyGoDutch.
